4 Wickets in Scotland U15 Debut for Thomas
Written by Darren Hall
thomasScotland U15s got their 2012 season off to a winning start with victory over Derbyshire U15s.  On a fine summer's day, at Clydesdale CC.
Scotland U15 captain Ruari MacPherson (Carlton CC) had no hesitation in electing to bat first.  Unfortunately, wickets fell at regular intervals - and when Scott Cameron (Forfarshire CC) was caught, for 35, the U15s were 83/5 after 22 overs.
However, Haris Aslam (Carlton CC) and Ross Armour (Poloc CC) set about re-building the innings - with an important 6th wicket partnership. 68 runs were added in 15 overs before Aslam was bowled for 32 - trying to lift the scoring rate.
Armour, who got good support from Cameron Sloman (Grange CC), then decided to take the attack to Derbyshire - reaching his fifty, before pushing on with several boundaries and some quick scampering between the wickets.  Just after the second successive fifty partnership had been brought up, Armour was bowled for 73.
This triggered a slight collapse as 208/6 became 213/9 - with 23 balls still left in the innings.  However, Ryan Brown (Largo CC) and Ryan West (Aberdeenshire CC) added 24 for the last wicket - before West was stumped off the penultimate ball off the innings.  Scotland U15s 237 all out.

The Derbyshire reply started well - with the score racing along to 72/0, and both openers looking well set.  However, the momentum of the game changed with the third ball after drinks as Thomas Hilton (Livingston CC) found the outside edge and wicket-keeper Simon Whait (Penicuik CC) took an outstanding catch, diving away to his left.  Hilton found the edge again with the last ball of the over and Armour took a good catch low to his left at first slip.
Derbyshire 77/2. Opener Brandrick and number four Fearn-Wright then put on 60 for the third wicket, but the U15s had bowled well and had been given good support in the field to restrict the scoring rate to only 3 per over.
With Derbyshire being forced to take more risks, Ryan Brown struck - with a miss-timed drive, held (after a juggle) by Armour at mid-wicket.  In the following over, Cameron picked up an LBW - leaving Derbyshire on142/4 and needing almost 100 off 11 overs.  A couple more small partnerships formed, but Scotland kept the pressure up and picked up regular wickets - including a very confidently-taken skied catch by Fraser Gosse (Kinross CC) at deep mid-wicket.
The last ball of the innings saw Hilton pick up his 4th wicket - with Brandrick, who had been battling against cramp, being caught for 98.  Derbyshire 206/8 off their 50 overs.

Overall, a good 31-run victory to start the season - but, as with any early season game, the players have some things on think about and work on over the next few weeks (and during some of the upcoming Inter-Regional matches).
